A wellbeing & reassurance scan at Numi Scan Gateshead is a private 2D ultrasound from 15 to 40 weeks of pregnancy that gives you peace of mind between NHS appointments. Our experienced and registered sonographers check baby's movement, position, placenta location, amniotic fluid levels and heartbeat in one comprehensive scan. Appointments are 15 minutes long, no GP referral is needed, and you can book online for the same day or next day. The scan is £65 and includes 4 A6 prints, all images digitally, and a professional wellbeing report. Up to 7 guests are welcome.

A wellbeing & reassurance scan at Numi Scan Gateshead is a private 2D ultrasound from 15 to 40 weeks of pregnancy that gives you a reassuring update on your baby's development at any stage. It's the most popular reason women come back to see us between their NHS appointments, usually because the gap between the 20-week anomaly scan and routine midwife checks feels too long, or because something doesn't feel quite right and they want professional reassurance.
During your scan, our experienced and registered sonographer will check:
- Your baby's movement and wellbeing
- Baby's position (presentation)
- Placenta location
- Amniotic fluid levels
- An audible heartbeat trace
You'll see your baby live on our 90-inch projector screen and two 46-inch side TVs in a calm, non-clinical room, and you can bring up to 7 guests to share the moment. Appointments are 15 minutes. When should you book a wellbeing scan?
The wellbeing scan is available at any stage from 15 weeks onwards, which makes it the most flexible reassurance scan we offer. Most parents book one (or sometimes two) during one of these windows:
- 15-19 weeks: If you've had your 12-week NHS dating scan but the wait until the 20-week anomaly scan feels too long. Many parents combine this with a Gender Scan at 15+ weeks.
- 20-25 weeks: The longest gap in NHS care, between the anomaly scan and routine midwife checks. A wellbeing scan here gives reassurance that baby is moving, growing and well-positioned.
- 26-32 weeks: If you're feeling reduced movement, have had a recent illness, or simply want reassurance. Many parents at this stage choose the 4D Baby Scan instead for the bonding experience, but the wellbeing scan is the more affordable clinical-only option.
- 33-40 weeks: Late-pregnancy reassurance. For growth and position checks closer to birth, the Growth & Presentation Scan is the more thorough option.
Preparation: If you're under 20 weeks, drink 1 litre of water 45-60 minutes before your appointment for the clearest images. After 20 weeks, a full bladder usually isn't required.
Why have a private wellbeing scan?
The NHS does an excellent job, but the system is designed for medical need, not reassurance. After the 20-week anomaly scan, NHS care relies on midwife appointments and self-monitoring of baby's movements. There's no routine NHS scan between 20 weeks and birth for healthy pregnancies. For most women who simply want extra reassurance, the NHS isn't an option.

Lovely place and staff. I went for the second time for a scan, was greeted by Jeffrey in reception with a smile, he was so welcoming and nice. Went in for a gender scan at 15 weeks with a lovely radiographer who checked and reassured me everything was fine. They have nice packages for the gender reveal (balloons, surprise box, cannon.. etc) but i just opted for a simple envelope. I would def recommend it if you're going for a private scan.

The sonographer was brilliant and explained everything she was seeing in detail which really put our minds at ease. She also gave us a free 4D look and played the heartbeat for us. We decided to do the LED lights for the gender reveal and she let us record, made such an occasion of it and did a countdown before changing the lights to blue for our boy 🩵 we also got a heartbeat bear as a keepsake. A 25% surcharge applies once a multiple pregnancy has been confirmed (typically at or after the NHS 12-week dating scan, or once identified on one of our private scans), to cover the additional scan time and dual reporting required.
Your appointment is 15 minutes long. You'll be welcomed into our Gateshead clinic on the High Street (opposite Trinity Square and the VUE Cinema), and can settle into our scan room with up to 7 guests. Our experienced and registered sonographer will perform a transabdominal scan (over the tummy, never internal) using warm gel. We'll check baby's movement, position, placenta, amniotic fluid and heartbeat. You'll see everything live on our 90-inch projector screen and two 46-inch side TVs, and leave with 4 A6 prints, all your digital images, and a written wellbeing report.
Preparation depends on how far along you are. Under 20 weeks: drink 1 litre of water 45-60 minutes before your appointment for the clearest images. Your bladder should feel comfortably full. After 20 weeks: a full bladder is usually not required, but staying well hydrated still helps. Wear loose-fitting clothes for easy access to your tummy. You don't need a GP referral. At Gateshead Numi Scan we have a team of fully experienced, qualified sonographers who will perform your scan. If you have a gender preference for your sonographer, please let us know during booking and we'll do our best to accommodate.
No. Our private scans complement NHS scans, providing additional reassurance and bonding opportunities. They don't replace your scheduled NHS appointments which you should still attend. Yes, you're welcome to bring up to 7 guests to share this special experience. Our room features a large projector screen (90-inch projection) and two 46-inch side TVs for an immersive 180-degree viewing experience from comfortable sofa seating. If you'd like to bring more than 7, please contact the clinic in advance and we'll do our best to accommodate.
Yes, multiple pregnancies are very welcome. A 25% surcharge applies once the multiple pregnancy has been confirmed (typically at or after the NHS 12-week dating scan, or once identified on one of our private scans), to allow for the extended scan time and dual reporting required to check each baby.
