A growth & presentation scan at Numi Scan Gateshead is a private 2D ultrasound from 24 to 40 weeks of pregnancy that checks your baby's development in the late stages, focusing on growth, position, placental function and overall wellbeing. It's the most thorough late-pregnancy scan we offer, and the one most parents book in the run-up to birth.
During your scan, our experienced and registered sonographer will measure and check:
- Baby's growth measurements: head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length
- Estimated fetal weight based on those measurements
- Baby's position (presentation): head down, breech or transverse
- Placenta location and function
- Amniotic fluid levels
- An audible heartbeat
You'll see your baby live on our 90-inch projector screen and two 46-inch side TVs in a calm, non-clinical room with up to 7 guests welcome. This scan is not a diagnostic scan. When should you book a growth & presentation scan?
The recommended window is 24 weeks onwards, with the most popular booking points being 28-32 weeks and again at 36 weeks. Here's a week-by-week guide:
- 24-28 weeks: The earliest reliable window for growth measurements. Some parents book here for an early growth check before NHS midwife appointments take over routine care. See our 28-week milestone guide.
- 30-32 weeks: The peak window for growth assessments, where baby is large enough for accurate measurements but still has plenty of space to move into a clear position.
- 34-36 weeks: The most popular window for the second growth scan. By this stage you'll get a strong indicator of birth weight, and any breech or transverse position is clinically meaningful for birth planning. See our 36-week milestone guide.
- 37-40 weeks: Last-minute reassurance, confirming baby's final position, growth and amniotic fluid. Useful if you've had reduced movement or specific late-pregnancy concerns.
For an additional bonding experience in this window, our 4D Baby Scan at £78 is the natural pairing for the earlier weeks (24-32). Many parents book a 4D scan around 26-30 weeks and a growth & presentation scan at 36 weeks for the full late-pregnancy picture.
Why have a private growth & presentation scan?
The NHS doesn't routinely offer growth scans for healthy pregnancies. NHS care after the 20-week anomaly scan is based on midwife appointments where baby's growth is assessed by palpation (fundal height measurement with a tape measure), useful but far less precise than an ultrasound measurement. NHS growth scans are reserved for pregnancies with specific clinical concerns: small-for-gestational-age suspicion, gestational diabetes, or other risk factors.

Lovely place and staff. I went for the second time for a scan, was greeted by Jeffrey in reception with a smile, he was so welcoming and nice. Went in for a gender scan at 15 weeks with a lovely radiographer who checked and reassured me everything was fine. They have nice packages for the gender reveal (balloons, surprise box, cannon.. etc) but i just opted for a simple envelope. I would def recommend it if you're going for a private scan.

If you've had a recent illness, are concerned about reduced movement, want confirmation of baby's position before birth, or simply want detailed reassurance about how baby is growing, a private growth scan gives you that with ultrasound-level precision. This scan is not a diagnostic scan. It's for reassurance only. For diagnostic concerns, contact your midwife or NHS Pregnancy Assessment Unit first.

A 25% surcharge applies once a multiple pregnancy has been confirmed (typically at or after the NHS 12-week dating scan, or once identified on one of our private scans), to cover the additional scan time and dual reporting required.
Your appointment is 15 minutes long, with the scan itself taking around 5-10 minutes. You'll be welcomed into our Gateshead clinic on the High Street (opposite Trinity Square and the VUE Cinema), and can settle into our scan room with up to 7 guests. Our experienced and registered sonographer will perform a transabdominal scan (over the tummy, never internal) using warm gel. We'll measure baby's head, abdomen and femur, calculate estimated fetal weight, confirm position, check the placenta and amniotic fluid, and confirm an audible heartbeat. You'll leave with 4 A6 prints, all your digital images, and a written wellbeing report.
Preparation is simple. Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment, but you do not need a full bladder for this scan (unlike earlier-pregnancy scans). Eat normally before your appointment, as gentle baby movement helps with image capture. Wear loose-fitting clothes for easy access to your tummy. You don't need a GP referral. The presentation scan will show whether your baby is head down (cephalic), breech (bottom or feet down), or in a transverse (sideways) position. This information is helpful for birth planning discussions with your midwife or consultant, particularly if baby is breech at 36+ weeks, which may lead to discussions about external cephalic version (ECV) or birth options.
