The Luxury 4D Baby Scan at Numi Scan Gateshead is our premium 4D bonding experience: a private HD Live ultrasound from 24 weeks of pregnancy designed around extended viewing time and the most comprehensive keepsake package we offer. It's the package most parents choose when they want the full bonding experience, not just the result, and want take-home memories that go beyond a couple of small prints.
During your scan, our experienced and registered sonographer will:
- Show detailed facial features and expressions in real-time 4D HD Live
- Capture baby's movement and activity: yawning, stretching, smiling
- Confirm baby's position (presentation)
- Check placenta location (where visible)
- Confirm an audible heartbeat
You'll watch on our 90-inch projector screen and two 46-inch side TVs from comfortable sofa seating with up to 7 guests welcome. The premium package includes a comprehensive print collection (1 A3 + 1 A4 + 2 A5 + 4 A6 prints), plus all images digitally, and a Heartbeat Bear recorded with your baby's actual heartbeat. When is the best time for a Luxury 4D scan?
The optimal window for any 4D scan is between 24 and 32 weeks, with the cinematic sweet spot around 26-30 weeks. Here's why timing matters:
- 24-26 weeks: Baby has developed enough fat under the skin for clear facial features, and there's plenty of amniotic fluid for excellent imaging. The Luxury package is recommended after your 20-week NHS anomaly scan.
- 26-30 weeks (sweet spot): The window most parents book the Luxury 4D for. Baby looks "newborn" but isn't yet too cramped, so the extended scan time delivers the most cinematic 4D images. See our 28-week milestone guide.
- 30-32 weeks: Still excellent images, though baby is getting larger and may be lower in the pelvis, which can make some facial views slightly harder.
- After 32 weeks: Image quality starts to reduce as baby has less space and amniotic fluid. For late-pregnancy scans focused on growth and position, book a Growth & Presentation Scan instead.
Image quality may vary depending on baby's position and other factors. We'll do everything we can during your appointment to capture the best possible images.

Both our standard 4D Baby Scan (£78) and the Luxury 4D (now £135, reduced from £145) use the same HD Live 4D technology and the same experienced and registered sonographers. The difference is the time you get with your baby and the keepsakes you take home.
The Luxury 4D Baby Scan adds:
- Extended scan time: more time to see your baby move, with multiple position changes if needed to get the best images
- Comprehensive print package: 1 large A3, 1 A4, 2 A5 and 4 A6 prints (vs 2 A5 + 4 A6 prints on the standard 4D scan). Perfect for framing, sharing with family, or filling a baby memory book.
- Heartbeat Bear keepsake: a soft toy with your baby's actual heartbeat recorded inside. Press the bear's paw any time to hear that first heartbeat sound. It's the keepsake most parents say they'll keep forever.
The NHS doesn't offer 4D ultrasound at all; NHS scans are 2D and clinical by design. At Numi Scan Gateshead our Luxury 4D Baby Scan is now £135 (reduced from £145) and includes the premium HD Live 4D experience, extended scan time, 2D wellbeing check, professional report, comprehensive print package (A3, A4, 2× A5, 4× A6), all images digitally, and the Heartbeat Bear keepsake. A 25% surcharge applies once a multiple pregnancy has been confirmed (typically at or after the NHS 12-week dating scan, or once identified on one of our private scans), to cover the additional scan time and dual reporting required.
You'll be welcomed into our Gateshead clinic on the High Street (opposite Trinity Square and the VUE Cinema), and can settle into our scan room with up to 7 guests. Our experienced and registered sonographer will perform a transabdominal scan (over the tummy, never internal) using warm gel. You'll watch your baby in HD Live 4D on our 90-inch projector screen and two 46-inch side TVs with extended scan time so you can really enjoy the moment: yawns, stretches, smiles and more. After the scan you'll receive your comprehensive print package (A3, A4, 2× A5, 4× A6), your Heartbeat Bear with baby's recorded heartbeat, and all your images digitally.
Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment. This is the single most important thing for clear 4D images. Drink 500-750ml of water around 30-45 minutes before your scan; your bladder should feel comfortably full but not painful. Eat normally before your appointment, as gentle baby movement helps with image capture. Wear loose-fitting clothes for easy access to your tummy. You don't need a GP referral. 4D ultrasound is the latest generation of ultrasound scanning technology: it adds a fourth dimension of time, letting you see your baby move in real time. Combined with HD Live technology, it produces stunningly realistic images of your baby's face, expressions and movements. By taking multiple 3D images, we can show live-action images of your baby's movements throughout your scan.
3D ultrasound creates a composite layering of 2D images, producing photograph-like still visualisations of your baby's face and features. While 3D shows still images, 4D adds movement so you can watch your baby in real time. The Luxury 4D Baby Scan at Numi Scan Gateshead uses HD Live technology: the latest generation, with realistic skin tones and natural lighting effects.
Image quality depends on baby's position and other factors. We'll do everything we can during your extended appointment to encourage baby to move into a better position, and the Luxury package's extended scan time gives us more opportunity than the standard 4D. If we still can't capture good images, we offer a one-time complimentary re-scan (Monday to Friday, subject to availability).
