A 4D baby scan at Numi Scan Gateshead is a real-time HD Live ultrasound from 24 weeks of pregnancy that lets you see your baby's facial features and movements in stunning lifelike detail. It combines a 2D wellbeing check with extended 4D viewing time on our 90-inch projector screen and two 46-inch side TVs, with up to 7 guests welcome. The scan is £78, takes around 10-15 minutes inside a 20-minute appointment, and you'll leave with 2 A5 + 4 A6 prints, all your images digitally, and a professional wellbeing report. No GP referral is needed and same-day or next-day appointments are usually available.

Book Your 4D Baby ScanWhat is a 4D baby scan?
A 4D baby scan adds a fourth dimension, time, to traditional 3D ultrasound, letting you watch your baby move, yawn, stretch and even smile in real time. At Numi Scan Gateshead we use HD Live technology, the latest generation of 4D imaging that produces lifelike images with realistic skin tones and natural lighting effects, far closer to a photograph than the grainy black-and-white 2D images you might be used to from your NHS scans.
During your scan, our experienced and registered sonographer will:
- Show your baby's facial features and expressions in real-time 4D HD Live
- Confirm baby's position (presentation) and movement
- Check placenta location (where visible)
- Confirm an audible heartbeat
You'll watch everything on our 90-inch projector screen and two 46-inch side TVs from a comfortable sofa, and you're welcome to bring up to 7 guests. Appointments are 20 minutes long with around 10-15 minutes of active scan time so you have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the experience. When is the best time for a 4D baby scan?
The optimal window for a 4D scan is between 24 and 32 weeks, with the sweet spot around 26-30 weeks. Here's why timing matters:
- 24-26 weeks: Baby has developed enough fat under the skin for clear facial features, and there's still plenty of amniotic fluid for excellent imaging.
- 26-30 weeks (sweet spot): This is when you'll get the most cinematic 4D images. Baby is developed enough to look "newborn" but isn't yet too cramped for movement. See our 28-week milestone guide.
- 30-32 weeks: Still excellent 4D images, though baby is getting larger and may be lower in the pelvis, which can make facial views slightly harder.
- After 32 weeks: Image quality reduces as baby has less space and amniotic fluid. For late-pregnancy growth and position assessment, book a Growth & Presentation Scan instead.

Why have a private 4D baby scan?
The NHS doesn't offer 4D ultrasound. NHS scans are diagnostic, focused on checking for medical issues, not bonding. The 12-week dating scan and 20-week anomaly scan are the only routine NHS scans most pregnancies receive, and they're brief 2D scans with no real opportunity to see your baby's face.

Highly recommend! We went for our gender scan at 15 weeks exactly, the lovely receptionist managed our expectations in case it was a bit early, but explained that we could come back for free if needed. The sonographer was brilliant and explained everything she was seeing in detail which really put our minds at ease. She also gave us a free 4D look and played the heartbeat for us. We decided to do the LED lights for the gender reveal and she let us record, made such an occasion of it and did a countdown before changing the lights to blue for our boy 🩵 we also got a heartbeat bear as a keepsake. We will be back later for a full 4D scan!

Went in for a gender scan at 15 weeks with a lovely radiographer who checked and reassured me everything was fine. They have nice packages for the gender reveal (balloons, surprise box, cannon.. etc) but i just opted for a simple envelope. I would def recommend it if you're going for a private scan.

I cannot recommend this place enough. The building is clean, well presented and has a beautiful photo wall for capturing those special moments. The staff are so friendly and understanding and answer every question with passion and interest. The scan bed is one of the comfier I’ve been on and there is a large projected screen ahead as well as small screens each side so you get the perfect views of baby. The staff are so friendly and understanding and do what they can to go above and beyond to make you feel special. You don’t feel rushed choosing your photos at the end and the prices are incredible for what you get, the time and the service you receive. Moreover, if you can’t get baby to cooperate for the images they can reschedule in depending on your package easily and for free. I truly would not go anywhere else. 5* to all the team they’re amazing, thank you for helping to capture our special moments with our beautiful baby girl!

You don’t feel rushed choosing your photos at the end and the prices are incredible for what you get, the time and the service you receive. Moreover, if you can’t get baby to cooperate for the images they can reschedule in depending on your package easily and for free. I had my appointment today and the experience was lovely. Unfortunately the last time I was there was a misunderstood From the staff. After telling them the reason why I was not happy from the previous appointment, I receive a call from the manager of the clinic. We discussed how my previous appointment went and I explained to him where was the Issue. In the phone he been really friendly and really professional and looked he did understood where was the miscommunication he straightaway offered me another scan . our sonographer Both of the times Was really professional and really nice with me. During the scan she explained everything about the baby and made this experience more better. A big thank you goes to Jerry,Paula And Donna. Thank you for made me feel really welcome today.

Your appointment is 20 minutes long with around 10-15 minutes of active scan time. You'll be welcomed into our Gateshead clinic on the High Street (opposite Trinity Square and the VUE Cinema) and can settle into our scan room with up to 7 guests. Our experienced and registered sonographer will perform a transabdominal scan (over the tummy) using warm gel, while everyone watches on our 90-inch projector screen and two 46-inch side TVs. You'll see your baby's face in HD Live 4D, hear the heartbeat where visible, and leave with 2 A5 + 4 A6 prints, all images digitally, and a written wellbeing report.
Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment. This is the single most important thing for clear 4D images. Drink 500-750ml of water around 30-45 minutes before your scan; your bladder should feel comfortably full but not painful. Eat normally before your appointment, as gentle baby movement helps with image capture. Wear loose-fitting clothes for easy access to your tummy. No GP referral is needed. 3D ultrasound creates a composite layering of 2D images, producing photograph-like still visualisations of your baby's face and features. While 3D shows still images, 4D adds movement so you can watch your baby in real time. At Numi Scan Gateshead our 4D scans use HD Live technology: the latest generation, with realistic skin tones and natural lighting effects.
Image quality depends on baby's position and other factors. We'll do everything we can during your appointment to encourage baby to move into a better position. If we can't capture good images, we offer a one-time complimentary re-scan (Monday to Friday, subject to availability). Our sonographers are experienced at gently encouraging baby to shift.
