A gender scan at Numi Scan Gateshead is a private 2D ultrasound from 15 weeks of pregnancy that confirms whether you're carrying a boy or a girl, while also giving you a reassuring look at your baby's movement, position and heartbeat. It's the most popular reason parents come to see us in the second trimester, and one of the few moments in pregnancy that's entirely about excitement, not anxiety.
During your scan, our experienced and registered sonographer will:
- Determine your baby's gender with 99%+ accuracy
- Confirm baby's position (presentation)
- Check baby's movement and position
- Identify placenta location (where visible)
- Confirm an audible heartbeat
You'll see your baby live on our 90-inch projector screen and two 46-inch side TVs in a calm, non-clinical room, and you can bring up to 7 guests to share the moment. If you'd prefer to keep the result a surprise for a reveal party, we'll write the gender down and seal it in an envelope for you. When can you have a gender scan?
The earliest reliable visual gender determination on a 2D ultrasound is from 15 weeks of pregnancy. Earlier than that, accuracy drops sharply because baby's anatomy hasn't developed enough to be clearly visible. Here's a week-by-week guide:
- Before 15 weeks: Visual gender ID isn't reliable enough to offer. For an earlier result from 8 weeks, our DNA Gender Blood Test is the way to go: it's based on baby's DNA in your blood and is 99% accurate from 8 weeks.
- 15-16 weeks: The earliest reliable visual window. See our 16-week milestone guide. This is the gender determination sweet spot.
- 17-22 weeks: The peak window for visual gender ID. Most parents booking a private gender scan come during this window because it's after the NHS dating scan but before they'd otherwise wait for the 20-week anomaly scan.
- 22+ weeks: Still possible, but gender is sometimes harder to see if baby is in an unfavourable position. From 24 weeks, many parents combine a gender confirmation with our 4D Baby Scan for the bonding experience.
If your NHS sonographer wouldn't disclose gender at your 20-week anomaly scan (some trusts have a no-disclosure policy), a private gender scan at Numi Scan is the most reliable way to find out. Available after your initial NHS appointment.
Why have a private gender scan?
NHS care doesn't routinely include a dedicated gender scan. Many NHS trusts have a no-disclosure policy at the 20-week anomaly scan, meaning even if the sonographer can clearly see baby's anatomy, they won't tell you. Other trusts will tell you if you ask, but with no guarantees and no re-scan if baby isn't in a good position. For most parents who simply want to know, the NHS isn't a reliable option.

Highly recommend! We went for our gender scan at 15 weeks exactly, the lovely receptionist managed our expectations in case it was a bit early, but explained that we could come back for free if needed. The sonographer was brilliant and explained everything she was seeing in detail which really put our minds at ease. She also gave us a free 4D look and played the heartbeat for us. We decided to do the LED lights for the gender reveal and she let us record, made such an occasion of it and did a countdown before changing the lights to blue for our boy 🩵 we also got a heartbeat bear as a keepsake. We will be back later for a full 4D scan!

Lovely place and staff. I went for the second time for a scan, was greeted by Jeffrey in reception with a smile, he was so welcoming and nice. Went in for a gender scan at 15 weeks with a lovely radiographer who checked and reassured me everything was fine. They have nice packages for the gender reveal (balloons, surprise box, cannon.. etc) but i just opted for a simple envelope. I would def recommend it if you're going for a private scan.

I cannot recommend this place enough. The building is clean, well presented and has a beautiful photo wall for capturing those special moments. The staff are so friendly and understanding and answer every question with passion and interest. The scan bed is one of the comfier I’ve been on and there is a large projected screen ahead as well as small screens each side so you get the perfect views of baby. The staff are so friendly and understanding and do what they can to go above and beyond to make you feel special. You don’t feel rushed choosing your photos at the end and the prices are incredible for what you get, the time and the service you receive. Moreover, if you can’t get baby to cooperate for the images they can reschedule in depending on your package easily and for free. I truly would not go anywhere else. 5* to all the team they’re amazing, thank you for helping to capture our special moments with our beautiful baby girl!

After telling them the reason why I was not happy from the previous appointment, I receive a call from the manager of the clinic. We discussed how my previous appointment went and I explained to him where was the Issue. In the phone he been really friendly and really professional and looked he did understood where was the miscommunication he straightaway offered me another scan . our sonographer Both of the times Was really professional and really nice with me. Highly recommend! We went for our gender scan at 15 weeks exactly, the lovely receptionist managed our expectations in case it was a bit early, but explained that we could come back for free if needed. The sonographer was brilliant and explained everything she was seeing in detail which really put our minds at ease. She also gave us a free 4D look and played the heartbeat for us. We decided to do the LED lights for the gender reveal and she let us record, made such an occasion of it and did a countdown before changing the lights to blue for our boy 🩵 we also got a heartbeat bear as a keepsake. We will be back later for a full 4D scan!

Lovely place and staff. I went for the second time for a scan, was greeted by Jeffrey in reception with a smile, he was so welcoming and nice. Went in for a gender scan at 15 weeks with a lovely radiographer who checked and reassured me everything was fine. They have nice packages for the gender reveal (balloons, surprise box, cannon.. etc) but i just opted for a simple envelope. I would def recommend it if you're going for a private scan.

Excellent service. Went for a 4D scan so my daughter could see her brother but he wasn’t cooperating, we attended for a rescan and Gina was fantastic getting the images. The whole experience was second to none! Highly recommend

I cannot recommend this place enough. The building is clean, well presented and has a beautiful photo wall for capturing those special moments. The staff are so friendly and understanding and answer every question with passion and interest. The scan bed is one of the comfier I’ve been on and there is a large projected screen ahead as well as small screens each side so you get the perfect views of baby. The staff are so friendly and understanding and do what they can to go above and beyond to make you feel special. You don’t feel rushed choosing your photos at the end and the prices are incredible for what you get, the time and the service you receive. Moreover, if you can’t get baby to cooperate for the images they can reschedule in depending on your package easily and for free. I truly would not go anywhere else. 5* to all the team they’re amazing, thank you for helping to capture our special moments with our beautiful baby girl!

I had my appointment today and the experience was lovely. Unfortunately the last time I was there was a misunderstood From the staff. After telling them the reason why I was not happy from the previous appointment, I receive a call from the manager of the clinic. We discussed how my previous appointment went and I explained to him where was the Issue. At Numi Scan Gateshead our standard Gender Baby Scan is £68 and includes a 2D gender scan, professional report, 99%+ accurate gender determination, 4 A6 prints, all images digitally, and a complimentary 4D sneak peek when baby's position allows. A 25% surcharge applies once a multiple pregnancy has been confirmed (typically at or after the NHS 12-week dating scan, or once identified on one of our private scans), to cover the additional scan time and dual reporting required.
Your appointment is 15 minutes long, with the scan itself taking around 5-10 minutes. You'll be welcomed into our Gateshead clinic on the High Street (opposite Trinity Square and the VUE Cinema), and can settle into our scan room with up to 7 guests. Our experienced and registered sonographer will perform a transabdominal scan (over the tummy, never internal) using warm gel. We'll first check baby's position and heartbeat, then determine the gender. If you'd like to keep the result a surprise, we'll seal it in an envelope for you. You'll leave with 4 A6 prints, all your digital images, and a written scan report.
For the clearest images, drink 500-750ml of water around 30-45 minutes before your appointment, and try not to empty your bladder before the scan. Your bladder should feel comfortably full but not painful. Wear loose-fitting clothes that allow easy access to your tummy. You don't need a GP referral. The standard Gender Scan (£68) is everything you need to find out your baby's sex: professional scan report, 99%+ accuracy, free 4D peek when possible, 4 A6 prints. The Luxury Gender Reveal (£95) adds the celebration: a pink/blue confetti cannon or balloon, an A4 print, baby photo key ring, scan video recording, and is designed around hosting a reveal party. Both scans give you the same 99%+ accuracy; the difference is the celebration package.

If we can't determine the gender during your appointment, we'll do everything we can to encourage baby to move. With our standard Gender Scan, if we still can't see, you can rebook with a £20 charge for the re-scan. With the Luxury Gender Reveal, the re-scan is completely free, which is why some clients prefer the Luxury package.
