Viability Scans Explained: What They Check and What Results Mean
The checks a viability scan makes, who tends to book one, and an honest guide to what the results can mean.
Quick Answer
A viability scan is an early ultrasound at 6 to 8 weeks that checks your pregnancy is developing as expected. It confirms the pregnancy is in the womb, looks for a heartbeat, counts the babies and takes early measurements. The NHS does not usually scan this early without a clinical reason, so many parents book one privately. See how it compares with our other early scans.

The Checks a Viability Scan Makes
- That the pregnancy is inside the womb
- A heartbeat, where it is visible at this stage
- Whether there is one baby or more
- Early measurements against your dates
- A written sonographer report for you to keep
Who Books One
Mostly parents who would find it hard to wait for the NHS scan at around 10 to 14 weeks. Common reasons include a previous miscarriage, pregnancy after fertility treatment, uncertain dates, or simply wanting to see the pregnancy before telling anyone. You do not need a GP referral or a clinical reason.
What the Results Can Mean
Most scans show a pregnancy in the womb with a heartbeat, measuring about where you expected. Your sonographer explains what is on screen, and you leave with images and a written report.
Sometimes it is too early to tell, usually because you ovulated later than your dates assume. Where further assessment is clinically needed, your sonographer may recommend a follow-up scan; any follow-up is at their discretion and not routinely included in the package.
Occasionally a scan shows something that needs NHS care. Your sonographer will explain it carefully, give you a written report and refer you to your NHS Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. You will not be left to work it out alone.
